Yugoslavia, December 1993. Hyperinflation has turned everyday life into a struggle. An average monthly salary can barely buy a bottle of milk — if any can be found.

Nada, a history teacher known for being strict but fair, refuses to tolerate cheating in her classroom despite the growing sense that everyone is cutting corners just to get by. As New Year approaches, she sets out to find a toy tractor for her five-year-old son Jovan — the one gift he dreams of.

After searching through Yugoslavia's empty stores without success, Nada crosses the Danube into neighboring Romania where she begins making compromises she never expected to make.

When all her money is stolen, Nada finally finds herself unable to resist temptation. She steals the toy and runs. But holding the toy in her hands, she realizes what it has cost her. Unable to betray the values she has tried so hard to protect, she returns the toy to the store.

As the journey comes to an end, an unexpected moment of wonder reminds Nada and Jovan that even in the darkest of times, hope can arrive from the most unlikely places.
